The science of lipidomics has been defined as “the full characterization of lipid molecular species and of their biological roles with respect to expression of proteins involved in lipid metabolism and function, including gene regulation”. In other words, not only are comprehensive analyses required, but they must be related to the biological function of lipids through a knowledge of all enzymes, genes and other factors that may relevant, including the physical relationships of lipids in their membrane environments. Often, the data obtained are intended to shed light on human disease states.
