Instructor Bio
In August 2018, Giorgia Purcaro began her position as Professor of Analytical Chemistry at Gembloux Agro-Bio Tech, University of Liège (Belgium). Prior to this role, she worked for two years as a Research Scientist at the Thayer School of Engineering, Dartmouth College (NH), where her project focused on the discovery of early biomarkers of lung infection using breath analysis by GC×GC. From 2015 to 2016, she served as R&D Director at Chromaleont srl, a company dedicated to the development of instruments and applications in separation science.
From 2012 to 2015, Purcaro was an Assistant Professor in the Department of Food Science at the University of Udine. She earned a degree in Food Science and Technology from the University of Udine in 2002 and a PhD in Food Science in 2008. During her doctoral studies, she spent six months at RMIT University in Melbourne, Australia, collaborating with Prof. P.J. Marriott on the development of analytical techniques based on hyphenated chromatography methods (GC×GC).
From October 2008 to February 2011, she was a postdoctoral researcher in the laboratory of Professor L. Mondello at the University of Messina, where she developed comprehensive chromatography methods with different interfaces and detection systems. In 2011, she was awarded an Italian project for young scientists (Project code: RBFR10GSJK) titled “Advanced analytical techniques for the analysis of contaminants in food products.”
Purcaro’s research interests include food contaminants and the development of conventional chromatography techniques, as well as comprehensive chromatography methodologies (GC×GC, LC–GC, LC×GC). More recently, her work has focused on olive oil authentication by studying the fingerprint of volatile fractions and minor components of different oils, applying –omics approaches along with GC×GC–MS/FID techniques.
