COURSE DESCRIPTION
Industrial R&D careers rarely follow a predictable path. Scientific discoveries, evolving business priorities, new technologies, and global market demands continually create opportunities for researchers to adapt, expand their expertise, and pursue new challenges.
In this course, 2026 Rosen Award recipient Julian Barnes shares insights gained from a 44-year industrial R&D career spanning surfactants, detergents, engine lubricants, automotive fuels, and enhanced oil recovery technologies. Through real-world examples and personal experiences, Julian Barnes will demonstrate how advanced education in chemistry and chemical engineering can be leveraged across diverse industries to build a rewarding and resilient career.

MEET THE INSTRUCTOR
Julian Barnes has had a 44-year career in R&D career in Industry moving across several different technology areas. This career has given him an excellent perspective on what to consider making a rewarding career and how to remain flexible as circumstances change. Although retired from a multi-national company in 2024, he remains active in voluntary and paid industry consultancy roles. His passion is science (in general) and chemistry and biochemistry in particular and in helping younger R&D professionals navigate their careers.

- To generate thoughts, ideas and tips on how to apply a PhD in chemistry/ chemical engineering to a career in Industry, using one career path for pointers for 2026+
- Thoughts on “To PhD or not to PhD” (or do a MSc).
- Thoughts on how a PhD prepares you well for the demands of a career in Industry.
- Differences on working in Industry versus Academia. Industry R&D roles tend to be project specific with firm deadlines agreed with the business. They also often involve working in multi-disciplinary teams with the need to “learn the other team member’s language”
- Thoughts on moving into a Marketing or Commercial role in Industry.
- How living and working in a different country adds a different dimension.
- Your academic credentials give entry to your early career, though after a few years it is your team working and performance that leads to career progression.
- R&D projects in industry can stop due to a number of factors, so you need to be flexible / re-deployable. And be willing to re-apply your combined academic qualifications and career experience to different areas. This can be exceedingly stimulating!
- Thoughts on Technical Expert (in a particular area) versus a Generalist and in-between.
- For the future, Industrial R&D in chemistry holds great interest and technical challenges with a continuing demand for R&D professionals.
