The Samuel Rosen Memorial Award of the AOCS Surfactants and Detergents Division recognizes an individual who has made a significant advancement, cumulative advancements, or application of surfactant chemistry principles. This award commemorates more than 40 years of Samuel Rosen’s work as an industrial chemist on the formulation of printing inks. Initiated and sponsored by Milton J. Rosen.

Scientists or technicians who have:

- worked most of their career within industry, preferably within the last three years of the award recognition
- made significant advancement or application of the principles of surfactant chemistry, or cumulation of career achievements

Dr. Phillip Vinson joined Procter & Gamble in 1990 after earning his B.S. from Purdue University and Ph.D. from the University of Minnesota, where he studied surfactant and polymer microstructures. Over his 34-year career at P&G, he became a leading expert in surfactant innovation, holding over 100 patents and driving major advancements in laundry detergents, dishwashing liquids, fabric softeners, and surface care products.
Beyond his technical achievements, Phil actively fostered collaboration within P&G and the broader scientific community. He chaired P&G’s Colloid & Surface Science Community of Practice and contributed to AOCS, CESIO, and ACS through leadership, presentations, and conference organization. A recipient of the 2020 AOCS Surfactants and Detergents Division Distinguished Service Award, he also served as an associate editor and continues on the editorial advisory board of the Journal of Surfactants and Detergents. Phil enjoys traveling, hiking, and time with his wife Jane, their four children, and grandchildren.
