The Honored Student Award encourages and recognizes graduate students doing research in one of the areas represented by AOCS Divisions. Sponsored by the AOCS Foundation.
What does the recipient receive?
- Certificate
- Up to a US $500 travel allowance for U.S. and Canada residents [or up to a US $1,000 travel allowance for recipients residing outside of those countries]
- Complimentary AOCS Annual Meeting registration, lodging and Division meal ticket
- Opportunity to present an award lecture at the AOCS Annual Meeting
Who is eligible?
Current graduate students:
- who have not begun a career in their chosen field by May 1 of the presentation year:
- whose research is comprised of fats, oils and related fields
- who have never received the Honored Student Award
How do I nominate someone?
Login to the Awards Portal to submit the following application materials by October 14.
- Complete application questions using the Awards Portal
- Letter of support from the major advisor
- Major Advisor Ranking Form (.docx) prepared by the major advisor
- At least one letter of recommendation from an individual familiar with the candidate’s accomplishments
- Copy of current university/college transcript showing courses and grades
- Detailed Curriculum Vitae which includes education, work and training experiences, awards, and a full list of publications and scientific/technical meeting presentations
- Abstract submitted for the current year’s AOCS Annual Meeting

Emerson David Nolasco Guzmán
Emerson, originally from Honduras, is a fifth-year Ph.D. student at the University of Nebraska–Lincoln, specializing in the health effects of bioactive food compounds and gut microbiome research. With a background in both industry and academia, he has published six scientific articles and earned 19 research awards. Emerson actively presents at conferences and currently serves as co-chair of an AOCS Health and Nutrition session.
Sumanjot Kaur is a Ph.D. student at the University of Arkansas, researching soybeans and sustainable food systems. She holds multiple awards for her work on rice byproducts and protein coproducts, including honors from AOCS and the Agri-Food Innovation Summit. Suman is also active in leadership and professional development beyond academia.
Thilini Dissanayake is a Ph.D. candidate at the University of Manitoba, researching hemp protein-based nanodelivery systems to enhance bioactive compound bioavailability. She holds an MSc in sustainable food packaging and has conducted research in Sweden, Australia, and India. Thilini is an active volunteer and member of AOCS, IFT, and CIFST.
Yifu Chu is a Ph.D. candidate in the Department of Agricultural, Food, and Nutritional Science, University of Alberta, and in Dr. Lingyun Chen’s Lab. His research is mainly focused on the generation of functional microgels with controllable size based on biopolymers and exploring their potential applications in food and biomaterial fields.
