Most Recent Recipient
Santosh Thapa, Graduate Student, South Dakota State University
Santosh graduated in 2019 from Tribhuvan University, Nepal, with a bachelor’s degree in food technology. Right after graduation, he started working as a production officer at Sujal Dairy Pvt. Ltd, Pokhara, Nepal. Simultaneously, he got an opportunity to collaborate in a research project and published a research paper back in 2022. This achievement made him realize his interest in research and he decided to continue his studies and pursue a career in academia.
Santosh was particularly fascinated by the research interest of Dr. Bishnu Karki on circular bioeconomy, using fungal fermentation to valorize agricultural wastes and joined her lab at South Dakota State University for MS in biological sciences in 2023 January. His research journey began with a project focusing on using fungi to valorize the sunflower processing wastes. Simultaneously, Santosh is working in collaboration with his peers to valorize other agri-residues like soybean hulls, canola meal, camelina meal and thin-stillage. He got a chance to participate in several conferences for poster (6; 3 as presenting author) and oral (one) presentations. Besides research, he also worked as a graduate teaching assistant for a general-biology course and mentored both graduate and undergraduate students on research related to agricultural wastes valorization. As a result of his dedication and never-ending support from his advisor, Santosh was awarded the Bio-Micro Graduate Student Association (BMGSA) Travel Award (April 2023), NSF Multistate Travel Award (July 2023), and ranked second for graduate oral presentation at 83rd North Central Branch Meeting of the American Society for Microbiology (November 2023).
