The Australasian (AAOCS) Section Award of Scientific Excellence in Lipid Research is awarded to a scientist from within the Australasian region that has made a significant research contribution toward fats and oils research, either cumulatively or in a single major advancement. The award is held every second year in conjunction with the Section’s biennial meeting
What does the recipient receive?
- Plaque
- Up to an AU $1,500 travel allowance to attend the AOCS Annual Meeting
- Complimentary registration to attend and present an award lecture at the AAOCS Section biennial meeting
Who is eligible?
- Current members of the AOCS Australasian Section from the Australasian Region
- Scientists who have made significant research contributions towards fats and oils research, either cumulative (lifetime achievement) or one major advancement that holds substantial promise for its effect in the near future

- Letter of nomination describing the candidate’s research and service in the fields of fats, oils and related materials

Professor Maria Makrides is the Executive Director of the South Australian Health and Medical Research Institute (SAHMRI).
As a clinical nutritionist, Maria is committed to improving the nutrition and health of mothers and their babies through the conduct and translation of high quality research. She has over 350 peer reviewed publications. Maria led some of the seminal studies to determine omega-3 fatty acid requirements for preterm and term infants as well as pregnant women. She is an elected Fellow of the Australian Academy of Science and the Australian Academy of Health and Medical Science. Maria was President of the International Society for the Study of Fatty Acids and Lipids (ISSFAL, 2021-2024) and awarded South Australian Scientist of the Year in 2022.
