Scott Bloomer

Dear AOCS Members and Colleagues,

It is my distinct honor to celebrate the career of Scott Bloomer, a personal friend and a distinguished leader in the field of oil chemistry, as he embarks on a well-deserved journey into retirement. After an illustrious career spanning five decades, Scott will be stepping away from the role of Chief Science Officer at the American Oil Chemists' Society (AOCS) on September 27th.

Scott Bloomer's journey into the world of research began in 1973 at Honeywell, Inc. doing research in humidity sensors. Over the years, his career unfolded as an inspiring narrative of scientific exploration and innovation. His contributions extended to various fields, including smoke detectors, biosensors, enzymatic interesterification, basic oilseed processing, and the application of enzymes to milk compounds.

With a commitment to advancing knowledge and sharing insights, Scott authored a dozen peer-reviewed papers and served as both an Associate Editor and Senior Associate Editor for the Journal of the American Oil Chemists’ Society (JAOCS) for 8 years, enriching our understanding of the complex world of oil chemistry. He also served as a contributing editor for the AOCS member magazine, INFORM, for an impressive 21 years, further cementing his role as a thought leader in the industry.

Scott's career trajectory took him to ADM managing the fats and oils portfolio, where he not only excelled in drafting and defending patents but also left an indelible mark on the industry. His leadership and expertise contributed significantly to the growth and success of the organization.

In recent years, Scott assumed the pivotal role of Director, Technical Services and, more recently, Chief Science Officer at AOCS, where his responsibilities extended far and wide. Under his leadership, Scott established the most diverse and competent Technical Services team in the history of the Society and grew program revenue by a remarkable 17.5%.

His dedication to the development and revision of the current edition of Official Methods and Recommended Practices of the AOCS will help maintain the highest standards of scientific rigor in our community. Additionally, he played a critical role in overseeing the AOCS Laboratory Proficiency Program, which serves more than 500 chemists worldwide, providing objective measures of laboratory capabilities.

Scott's tireless efforts also encompassed the representation of AOCS interests on the global stage. He plays a vital role in engaging with organizations like Codex Alimentarius and the International Organization for Standardization, ensuring that the interests of our scientific community were well-represented and protected.

As we bid adieu to Scott, we express our heartfelt gratitude for his unwavering dedication, relentless pursuit of excellence, and profound impact on the field of oil chemistry. His legacy will continue to inspire future generations of scientists and researchers.

Please join us in congratulating Scott on his retirement and wishing him all the happiness and relaxation he richly deserves. While he may be retiring from his formal role, we have no doubt that his passion for science and his commitment to the AOCS community will endure.

Congratulations, Scott, and best wishes for a rewarding retirement!
