Member Spotlight: Meet Eric Cochran

Member Spotlight is a regular INFORM magazine column that features members who play critical roles in AOCS.

What is the biggest scientific challenge you see today?

There are so many challenges, but in my world of polymers I often think about the trillion pounds of plastics the world uses, and largely discards. How can we continue to enjoy the enormous benefits polymers bring to society without the drawbacks? (I think natural oils have a very important role to play here!)

What excites you about your work?

The most exciting aspect of being a professor is playing some small role in the journey of each student as they work to become the best version of themselves. I learn with them, I learn from them, and together we work to create new knowledge. It can be very fulfilling!

Is there anything you are looking forward to in the coming months (years)?

My research group has been working on a family of soybean oil based polymers for asphalt for over a decade now. These materials have finally made it to commercial scale, and the next months and years will see them competing in the real world. Will Soylei Innovations become a household name? Maybe not, but I’m looking forward to seeing where it goes!

How has AOCS helped you solve the challenges you encounter in your work?

AOCS has been a great way to meet others in the field—from other universities, government labs, big companies, and startups! I am always amazed at how a single 5-minute conversation with a stranger at an AOCS meeting can turn into a new opportunity.

What do you like to do outside of work/AOCS?

I won’t ever say ‘no’ to a game of pickleball or racquetball.
