Customer desire for products that feel good to use and deliver perceived improvements to skin and hair is driving the personal care and cosmetics industry toward new approaches in product development. Formulation is now as much about creating sensory delight as it is about product stability.

Triglycerides, largely emollients (fats, butters), are the most prominent category of lipids used in personal care, but there are several highly functional and valuable components in the unsaponifiable (non-triglyceride) fraction of plant oils and fats.

These non-triglyceride lipids can play a vital role in helping you make informed product formulation choices that meet evolving customer expectations.

In this course, Benjamin Schwartz takes a deeper look at these lesser-known, non-triglyceride lipids and how their unique properties can be used for personal care applications.

The course content is divided into three lectures, each lasting two hours, to better fit your busy workday. Over the course of the lectures, you will examine the chemical properties of lipid components including tocopherols, sterols, triterpenes, phenols, phospholipids, ceramides, sphingolipids, galactolipids, and waxes. We will then explore how the different functional groups of these components produce their chemical properties, and, in turn, how those chemical properties can be used to produce specific product performance characteristics.

Who Should Attend?

Cosmetic chemists as well as anyone working in formulation or product development in the personal care industry will benefit from a basic understanding of lipid chemistry and how lipids impact product functionality. The course will also benefit people who work in sourcing raw materials and ingredients used in cosmetics and personal care products.

Graduating with a Bachelor’s Degree in Biological Sciences, Benjamin Schwartz began his career in Personal Care as a lab technician for The Estee Lauder Companies. After a move to the west coast, he spent 12 years as an R&D Chemist, and then Manager, for contract manufacturer Columbia Cosmetics. Through this experience, he has gained an intimate knowledge of personal care chemistry and formulations. Now having joined AAK, a global vegetable oil manufacturer, he brings this knowledge and insight to the world of plant-based lipids and their applications for personal care and cosmetics.
