I bet that got your attention! Chances are, if you’re
a student, the word “free” is music to your
ears. That is why AOCS strives to offer as many
free activities to its student members as
possible. Just take a look . . .
The Student Common
Interest Group
(SCIG) meeting will be held on Wednesday, May
3rd, from 12:00 to 1:00 p.m. in the America’s Center.
***(free) PIZZA will be served!!**
All students are encouraged to attend and to share
their ideas for helping to make our group an even
more vital part of the AOCS. This is a forum for the
discussion of goals and the future direction of the
SCIG. We need your ideas and input—please join us!

Student Attendees Seeking Roommates at the
Meeting — Students who plan on attending the
meeting will be able to use AOCS as a resource to
match up with a roommate during the meeting.
If you would like to find a roommate, please contact
Barbara
Semeraro at AOCS. Please provide the following
information: your name, phone number, fax number,
email address, gender, smoking preference, and any
other relevant information. Responses will be
accepted until March 10, 2006. At that time
a list of all interested parties will be complied and
emailed to all those who have expressed an interest
in finding a roommate. AOCS will not pair up
attendees or make reservations; they will simply
provide the contact information so that you may
make arrangements with others on the list. The
meeting housing deadline is March 17, 2006.
Bring your resume to the
AOCS
Placement Center in St. Louis!
This service is free to all AOCS members attending
the Annual Meeting & Expo. Job descriptions and
resumes are available at the AOCS Pavilion in the
Expo Hall. If you wish to have your one-page resume
posted, please bring 20 copies to the AOCS
Information Booth at the meeting. Don’t forget to
check the job board as well. AOCS posts available
positions in related industries
worldwide. | |
The Student Mentor Program is now in its
13th year. For those of you who have not
participated, this is definitely something you should
take advantage of!
A number of AOCS members from academia, industry,
and government have volunteered to take you and
another student to (a free) breakfast. This breakfast
is a tool to research the industry and gain tips on
finding employment after graduation. (Please keep in
mind that this is a chance to gain a professional
contact and advice, not a job-hunting
opportunity. . .no resumes, please!) Look for sign-up
sheets at the Annual Meeting in the AOCS Pavilion.
It’s first-come, first-served, so don't delay in signing
up for this great opportunity!

The AOCS Foundation is once again asking for
student assistance in running the
Foundation Silent Auction. The Silent Auction will be
held during the AOCS Annual Meeting & Expo and will
have various goods and services which were donated
by member companies. These items will be on display
for all meeting attendees who will be encouraged to
make a silent bid for the items. At the close of the
day on Tuesday, the highest bid will be declared the
winner and the money will be used by the Foundation
to sponsor student initiatives. |
By volunteering to spend one hour of your time, you
will show the meeting attendees your commitment to
student programs and your gratitude to the
Foundation for the time and funds spent on these
programs. And if that isn't enough to make you want
to volunteer, you will get the opportunity to meet
with a wide variety of AOCS members (who could be
future job leads) while they view the materials at the
Foundation booth. Working the booth is fun and
easy, and no prior experience is required. If you are
willing to donate a small portion of your time at the
meeting, or if you have any questions about the
program, please email Amy Lydic at
amyl@aocs.org.
Amy will contact you directly to coordinate all
volunteers.
Session Co-chairpersons – Are you looking
for an exciting way to build your
resume and get to know professionals in your field of
interest? Are you hoping to broaden your knowledge
and experience in your chosen field?
AOCS is accepting requests from student attendees
who would like to participate in the technical program
by serving as session
co-chairpersons. Among the duties required
of session co-chairpersons are: obtaining an
accurate head count of the number of people
attending, monitoring the time allotted to each
speaker, and otherwise assisting the session
chairperson. This is an excellent opportunity for
student members to become
more visible and to establish professional contacts.
Please note that no previous experience is
necessary; it is an easy volunteer job, and the
benefits could last you a lifetime!
Those interested in this program should contact
Donna Elbon (phone: +1-217-359-2344; fax: +1-217-
351-8091; email: donnae@aocs.org). Please indicate in your correspondence your
area(s) of technical interest and expertise.
Here are some deals you can’t afford to pass up!
