Student Activities

Student Activities at the 99th AOCS Annual Meeting & Expo, May 18-May 21, 2008

Several events are planned for students attending the meeting. Please plan to take advantage of them while you are in Seattle, Washington, USA.

The Student Common Interest Group (SCIG) meeting
All students are encouraged to attend and to share their ideas for helping to make our group an even more vital part of the AOCS. This is a forum for the discussion of goals and the future direction of the SCIG. We need your ideas and input, so put this on your meeting schedule.

AOCS Placement Center
Bring your resume! If you wish to have your one-page resume posted, please bring 20 copies to the AOCS Information desk, near the Registration desk. Job description and resumes are posted in the AOCS Pavilion.

Student Mentor Program
For those of you who have not participated, this is definitely something you should take advantage of while at the meeting. A number of AOCS members from academia, industry, and government have volunteered to take you and another student to breakfast.

This breakfast is an opportunity to research the industry and gain tips on finding employment after graduation. Please keep in mind that this is a chance to gain a professional contact an advice, not a job-hunting opportunity. (No resumes, please!)

Look for sign-up sheets, near the Registration area, on SUNDAY afternoon. The Mentor Breakfast takes place on MONDAY morning. It is first-come, first-served, so don’t delay in signing up for this great opportunity.

AOCS Foundation Calls for Help from Student Members
The AOCS Foundation is once again asking for student assistance in running the Foundation Silent Auction. The Auction will have various goods and services which are donated by member companies. Theses items will be on display for all meeting attendees who will be encouraged to make a silent bid for the items. Funds raised will be used by the Foundation to sponsor student initiatives.

Volunteer to spend one hour of your time and show the meeting attendees your commitment to student programs. By volunteering, you will get the opportunity to meet with a wide variety of meeting attendees while they view the materials at the Auction. Working the Auction is fun and easy, and no prior experience is necessary.

Please contact Amy Lydic if you are interested in helping the AOCS Foundation Auction.

Student Attendees Seeking Roommates at the Meeting
Students who plan on attending the meeting will be able to use AOCS as a resource to match up with a roommate during the meeting. If you would like to find a roommate, please contact Barbara Semeraro at AOCS. Please provide the following information: your name, phone number, fax number, email address, gender, smoking preference, and any other relevant information. Responses will be accepted until March 10, 2008. At that time a list of all interested parties will be complied and emailed to all those who have expressed an interest in finding a roommate. AOCS will not pair up attendees or make reservations; they will simply provide the contact information so that you may make arrangements with others on the list. The meeting housing deadline is March 17, 2008.

Student Co-chairpersons Sought
Are you looking for an exciting way to build your resume and get to know professionals in your field of interest? AOCS is accepting requests from students attending the meeting who would like to participate in the technical program by serving as session co-chairpersons.

Those interested in this program should contact Donna Elbon at AOCS by March 3. Please indicate in your correspondence your area(s) of technical interest, and day(s) and time(s) available. AOCS can not guarantee that all students interested in the program will be offered to co-chair a session.

Discounted Meal Ticketing Pricing for Students
All AOCS Divisions and Sections will be offering a special discount to students who would like to attend their meal function at the meeting. This is truly an exceptional opportunity to network with those in a given field, so don’t miss out. Student prices are $5 for breakfast, $10 for lunch, and $20 for dinners offered by the AOCS Divisions and Sections.
