Junior Faculty Travel Grant

This program was established to enable junior level faculty to attend the AOCS Annual Meeting & Expo in order to participate in the S & D Division sessions. The grant would provide part of the necessary funds to attend the AOCS Annual Meeting & Expo and hopefully encourage the recipients along with their students to become active in the Division and the Society.

NATURE OF THE GRANT
The grant amount is limited to no more than $1,000 per grant. The maximum number of grants per year is three. The review committee will set the grant limit for each recipient. The grant limit may vary for each grant recipient based upon the recipient’s need and location, and the funds available. The total of all grant disbursement for any given year may not exceed $2,000.

The funds allocated to the individuals are intended to partially pay travel and meeting registration expenses to attend the AOCS Annual Meeting. It is anticipated that the funds may not cover the total expenses incurred and this grant would supplement other travel funds. The review committee will determine which expenses shall be reimbursed.

ELIGIBILITY
The Division prefers to offer grants to junior faculty at any institutions of higher learning. Assistant professors are preferred, followed by associate professors. Full professors are not eligible. While the junior faculty need not be a member of the S & D Division or the Society, preference will be given to faculty that demonstrate an interest in becoming active in the S & D Division in the future. The applicant should also demonstrate financial need (ie, demonstrate that travel funds are not available to fully support participation in the annual meeting).

A given faculty can not receive this grant more than two years-in-a-row and can not receive the grant more than a total of three times. Failure of a candidate to receive a junior faculty travel grant in one year shall not bar him/her from consideration for the grant in subsequence years.

APPLICATION PROCEDURES
The applicant should submit:

  • an application statement,
  • a two-page curriculum vitae,
  • a financial need statement including a budget and justification for the requested travel funds.

Application statements are limited to a 300 - 1000 word summary describing the significance of the nominee’s accomplishments in research, including grant procurement, students supervised, published papers. In addition, the application statement should clearly demonstrate how the applicant’s research interests are consistent with activities of the S & D Division, and the applicant’s potential for future participation in S & D activities. The financial need statement should include a budget for requested funds and a justification for the financial need.

APPLICATION DEADLINE
Application statements are due by February 1 prior to the Annual Meeting year where the grant funds are to be used. Complete applications should be sent to Prof. Edgar Acosta, email: acosta@chem-eng.utoronto.ca or fax: +1-416-946-8605, Attn. Edgar Acosta.
