| News from the Chair |
The S&D Division has come a long way in the
last couple years! I am proud to report that your S&D
Division team has accomplished several things,
including:
- Our division bylaws have been updated to help
simplify running the division
- Our newsletter and election process have
gone “electronic”
- JSD has gotten a face lift under Mark
Nace’s fine
leadership
- The S&D technical program for the AOCS annual
meeting has greatly diversified thanks to efforts led
by Mike Showell
- Our alliances with SDA and CSPA have been
strengthened
- We have increased the frequency of S&D-related
technical training courses at the annual meetings
from 1 every other year to 2 a year
- The first AOCS computer training module on the
introduction of surfactants was developed by Laura
Watson
- Student Travel awards to the annual meeting
were implemented under David Sabatini
We are also busy on other ideas, including:
- Availability of a CD containing S&D papers given
at AOCS annual meeting
- Video taping the Rosen Award winner for a
technical leaders archive
- Update of the “Who was Who” (a historical view
of the mergers and acquisitions that have occurred
within the S&D industry)
- Junior Faculty travel stipend
In 1988, I was about to graduate and was
interviewing for a job. One interview was with a
household products company that was looking for
formulators. My question then was, why don’t they
hire someone that studied formulations? 18 years
later, I realize that there are very few institutions
that teach about surfactants and formulation.
Last year’s S&D luncheon speaker, Don Stanutz,
President of Huntsman Performance Products, noted
that rising oil prices and cost pressures were driving
the reformulation of products. With the down-sizing
of our industry, and the increased need to change
formulations to respond to changes in feedstock
costs, formulation expertise will remain an important
facet of our industry. Where will our surfactant
scientists get this knowledge?
With a little imagination and momentum, I see the
S&D Division and the AOCS expanding to fill this need.
Our efforts to diversify coverage to include more than
just detergent formulations (e.g., industrial
applications, feedstocks, etc.) will continue to make,
in my opinion, our program at the annual AOCS
meeting a “must attend” event for those working to
connect and develop. It is also my hope to see our
journal, JSD, expand to 12 issues a year by
diversifying its focus into formulation, development,
testing, raw material reviews, and historical product
development stories.
The S&D Division and AOCS play a tremendous role in
our industry. I am not aware of any other member
organization that focuses at the interface of science
and the performance of formulated products.
With your involvement, possibilities are limitless.
Please give your time, talents and support to Mike
Showell as he becomes the next Chair of the S&D
Division.
