Newsletter November 2007Our FSFF Needs Money
The fundraising taskforce is composed of the following members: Leif Lundin, Kathy Groves, Marcel Paques.
WHY: The division needs money to allow the scheduling of high profile keynote speakers during our FSFF division symposium during the AOCS annual meeting. The existing financial resources only allow limited financial support for invited keynote speakers. In practice, not all invited keynotes accept our "generous" invitation, in most cases because they do not have the budget available for participation.
ACTUAL STATUS: In the actual situation the income of the division consists of: membership dues, luncheon fee (during AOCS annual meeting), and individual sponsors (annual basis). The main approach for boosting the division income is increase of the number of division sponsors, and obtain their mid- and long-term commitments. In particular the mid- and long-term commitments are important to allow mid- and long-term planning of cooperative activities.
MEMBER ROLE: Members can play an active and crucial role in fund raising: the division can benefit from their networks. Members may receive a letter containing relevant information supporting the active approach of potential sponsors. The members are asked to forward the letter to their network, and provide personal active support to the request.
BIG MONEY: Small amounts are very welcome. Regular members can pay more than the requested membership dues. Universities and industries can donate smaller amounts such as. $1000 / year. Most university groups are willing to donate, but the intention is almost never converted into practice. Possible alternatives are the specific donations to support a keynote speaker, a session, or short course. This can also be of interest for contact labs, manufacturers of processing equipment, analytical equipment, chemicals-reagents, kits and consumables.
