Processing Newsletter November 2006

Nara.Chairperson's Corner
Ramanathan Narayanan (Nara)

Thanks to all the members of the Processing Division for the opportunity to serve as your chairperson for the next two years. The division is run by volunteer members of the AOCS with support from the AOCS team. Our leadership is a good blend of processing industry professionals, consultants serving the industry, academics and equipment suppliers to the industry.

I took over from Mike Boyer during the last annual meeting in St. Louis. All the members of the division wish to thank Mike for his stewardship and look forward to his continued contribution to AOCS and the division.

Processing Division has an enthusiastic leadership team for the Annual Meeting in Quebec City (May 2007). Mike Snow, Nurhan Dunford, Jeff Rogers, Jim Willits, Tim Gum, Bryan Yeh are working on an informative program schedule for the annual meeting.

Processing Division is working closely with IOMSA and we plan to contribute to each other's annual meeting on a yearly basis. The intent is to expand the forum for discussion among all processing industry professionals.

We look forward to your suggestions and efforts to strengthen the division. Please contact any one of the Processing Division officers if you have questions or wish to volunteer for the division activities.

Meet the Board members

Here is an opportunity to get to know some of the people who are serving on the Board of the Processing Division. Feel free to use them as a resource or to give feedback on how we can make the Processing Division work for you.

Nurhan Dunford
I am an associate professor at Oklahoma State University, Department of Plant and Soil Sciences, and an oil/oilseed chemist at the Food and Agricultural Products Center. I do research and work with producers and processors in Oklahoma on their technical problems as related to oils, oilseeds, functional foods and nutraceuticals. I have been a member of AOCS for over 10 years, and currently am a member of the Processing, Edible Applications and Biotechnology Divisions. I have been on the Processing Division board for I think over five years now, as a member-at-large and secretary/treasurer. I facilitated the establishment of the Processing Division Graduate Student Award program. I represent the division at the annual meeting Technical Committee, organized and chaired a number of technical sessions for the AOCS annual meeting, and served on AOCS award committees including Fellows, Honor Student and Processing Division Gradate Student Awards.

Mike Snow
My name is Mike Snow. I work for Bunge in St. Louis, Missouri in the Operations Dept. I have been a member of the AOCS Processing Division Board for about 3 years. I am enjoying working with the others in the Processing Division who are striving to continue to make the programs productive and beneficial for the members.

Bryan Yeh
I am currently an Assistant Vice President in General Electric's Water and Process Technologies business unit and am based outside of San Francisco, California. Prior to that, I ran my own company, Thermodyne Corporation, and worked for Cargill in a variety of positions in Oilseed Processing, Corn Milling and Nutraceuticals for over 18 years. This is my first year on the Processing Division board, although I have served as Session Chair for the past three AOCS meetings. I am looking forward to working with members to help make AOCS a valuable experience for you.

Jim Willits
I am currently Vice President of Sales and Marketing for Desmet Ballestra North America. I have worked my entire career within Agra Business, having worked in production and plant management for most of that time. My wife Jan and I live just outside Atlanta and enjoy the long spring and fall. I have been a member of AOCS since 1978 and have enjoyed being a part of the many positive things that it has sponsored over the years.

Graduate student award

All graduate students presenting a paper at any of the AOCS annual meeting Processing Division sessions are eligible for the award. This year students who want to be considered for the award need to present an extended abstract (1-2 pages) by the AOCS abstract submission deadline. We will also ask for at least one reference letter from their supervisors or professors. A committee formed of three AOCS members will review the applications. The winner of the award will get a check and a certificate and receive the award at the Processing Division luncheon at the annual meeting. The Division will pay for the student's luncheon fee. The award winner will also be acknowledged during the annual meeting Award Breakfast. Please contact Nurhan Dunford at nurhan.dunford@okstate.edu if you have any questions.

Newsletter "News"

The Processing Division Newsletter is one of the many means that we have to communicate to our members about "going-ons" of the division and how it relates to AOCS. It is also an opportunity for us to share news, information and ideas through our membership. The Newsletter will be sent out every March, August and October. If you have some news that you would like to share, or if you would like to write an article that you think will be of interest to fellow members, please send them by February 1, July 1 or September 1, to Bryan Yeh at bryan.yeh@ge.com.
