Feed Microscopy Newsletter November 2006

Division Luncheon
Neil Vary

The Feed Microscopy Division luncheon was a welcomed break from the hustle and bustle of the 97th Annual AOCS Meeting & Expo. I saw many familiar faces there, along with several new faces, as we all gathered to break bread together.

Once everyone had their fill of the delicious catered lunch, a few business items were discussed. Christine Rogers-Kelly started things off by presenting the annual Secretary's Report and the Treasurer's Report. This was followed by an update of the Feed Microscopy Laboratory Proficiency Program (LPP). Although she could not attend the meeting this year, it was announced that Annie Fournier would be resigning her position with LPP. Many thanks go to Annie for her years of dedication and hard work to this important program. Fortunately, finding a person to fill this vacancy was easier than anticipated as Gary Ideus stepped up to the challenge. The final item of business was the update to our Division's newsletter. The major change to the newsletter, as you can see, is the format and a change in the AOCS newsletter editorial staff. I would like to welcome Greg Reed and Jeremy Coulter.

Once the business portion of the luncheon was completed, Pat, our outgoing Chair, entertained us all with her "You Want Me to do What?!" presentation. This witty speech described challenges and (this may be an understatement) uncomfortable situations Pat has had to face head-on, even though she would have preferred to avoid them altogether. But these situations were met with a brave face and turned out for the best.

Following Pat's presentation, this year's Golden Microscope awards were presented to fellow microscopists. The recipients of this award are chosen by the Division board and given to microscopists that have excelled in the field of microscopy. This year two Golden Microscope awards were presented. One was given to Marge McCutcheon and the other to Randy Sample. Congratulations to you both!

After the presentation of the Golden Microscope awards, Marge McCutcheon surprised Pat with a beautiful wooden box used to store photographs. This was given to Pat as a sign of the Division's appreciation for the many hours of work and dedication Pat has given to us over the years. This gift will no doubt come in handy to Pat and her photojournalistic aptitude. Once again Pat, the Division thanks you for your contributions and is grateful to have you with us!

Although Pat's term as Chair of the Division ended, her work with us is not complete. Pat will continue to serve on the board as the past Chair for the next couple of years. Additionally, Pat will be taking over from me as the Division Newsletter Editor. I happily passed the Editor torch to Pat as it was announced that I was elected as the new Division vice-Chair. I will certainly be busy in this new role. Thankfully, the Division will continue to have great leadership with Marge at the helm as she was elected as the new Division Chair. I look forward to working with her and other members to ensure we continue the great work of our Division.
