Message From the Chair
Jim Barren
Thanks to all of you who attended our annual AOCS meeting in Québec City this year. The meeting was a joint session with the Japanese Oil Chemists' Society. It was a great event with some excellent talks in the 5 sessions that LOQ chaired: Omega-3 Fatty Acids–Oxidation; Oxidation in Muscle Foods and Interactions with Protein; Oxidations in Emulsions; Lipid Oxidation, Antioxidants, and Quality I; and Lipid Oxidation, Antioxidants, and Quality II. All divisions combined had over 650 technical presentations, oral and poster, in 13 interest areas under the direction of the organizing and program committees. The Expo had more than 120 exhibits.

Kathleen Warner's presentation at the AOCS Annual Meeting
I would like to thank some people for their contributions at this time. Kathy Warner of the USDA ARS NCAUR, USA was our LOQ luncheon speaker and she gave a great interactive talk entitled "What I Know for Sure About Sensory Evaluation." I would like to thank Karin Schwarz for years of excellent service co-chairing the technical program. Karin will be retiring from that position and Usha Thyiam will be taking over her responsibilities and working together with Afaf Kamal-Eldin. I would also like to take the opportunity to thank Ed Frankel for teaching his Lipid Oxidation and Antioxidants short course at this year's meeting. Many have benefited from his teachings and continue to do so through this course.
Congratulations to our award winners at this year's meeting:
- Edwin Frankel was awarded the Supelco/Nicholas Pelick AOCS Research Award established to recognize outstanding original research, as presented in high quality technical papers.
- Mette B. Let of the Technical University of Denmark was awarded the Honored Student Award for her research on protection against lipid oxidation in fish oil enriched foods.
Several people attended the roundtable discussion in Québec City this year, and all contributed to tentative program suggestions for next year. The proposed program ideas are sessions on omega-3's (perhaps a joint session with Edible Applications Technology), nutraceutical lipids & specialty oils (potential joint session with Health & Nutrition), lipid oxidation in emulsions, general lipid oxidation and quality, and frying oil. These program ideas are not final and anyone interested in contributing other ideas should contact our program chairpersons: Afaf Kamal-Eldin (email: afaf.kamal-eldin@lmv.slu.se) or Usha Thiyam (email: thiyam@cc.umanitoba.ca). If you plan to present next year remember the October 1, 2007 deadline for submission of a title.
I would like to welcome three new members-at-large: Amy Richards will be taking over the New Member Development Committee responsibilities, Usha Thiyam will be the Program Committee Co-Vice Representative, and Jill Winkler who will be in charge of the "Edwin N. Frankel Award for Best Paper in Lipid Oxidation".
A beer tasting and training session at the next AOCS meeting as an LOQ fundraiser and new member recruitment activity was proposed at the Division Council Meeting on Sunday, May 13. This event would be held on either Saturday or Sunday night. We would have a master brewer, skilled in the art of beer tasting and training to lead the event. Click here to take a survey to help us collect input on this idea. Or, if you have thoughts on this, please contact Jim Barren (JBarren@Kalsec.com) or John Weaver (JWeaver@Kalsec.com).
The 2009 Meeting will be the 100th anniversary of AOCS. Divisional is trying to put together a timeline of events over the last 100 years. Do you have photos or stories of important events for LOQ or AOCS from the last 100 years that you can share? If so, please contact Jim Barren (JBarren@Kalsec.com), Charlotte Jacobsen (cja@dfu.min.dk), John Weaver (JWeaver@Kalsec.com) or Cliff Hall (Clifford.Hall@ndsu.edu) and we will get those items to those in charge of the timeline.
Lastly, I would like to take this opportunity to thank Cliff Hall for his service to the LOQ Division. Cliff has been an extremely active and dedicated member and officer of the LOQ Division. Over many of the past years, he has represented us at divisional activities, been active in the programming committee, and has chaired the best paper award and various sessions. We are lucky to have him still involved, as he agreed at the LOQ board meeting to continue chairing the newsletter and heading up fund-raising activities. Cliff, we're glad that we are keeping you on the leadership team for another couple of years!
Jim

Updated Bylaws
The bylaws have been updated to reflect changes in the way we communicate. Thus, the executive committee would like everyone to have a chance to review the bylaws and near the end of the year will call for a vote to accept the changes. No significant changes have been made. Click here to read the bylaws.
Beer Tasting Event Survey
LOQ is interested in holding a session that will teach people the basics of beer tasting. We envision a basic session demonstrating the different flavors that occur in beer and how to recognize them, along with corresponding sampling. We have prepared a four-question survey for you to let us know if you would be interested in such an event. Click here to take survey.
