AOCS Protein and Co-Products Division Newsletter April 2008
Message from the Chair
Keshun LiuThe 2008 AOCS Annual Meeting and Expo is next month (May 18-21, Seattle, WA). Once again, AOCS and its Protein & Co-Products (PCP) Division have prepared high-quality technical and social programs for this year's Annual Meeting. There will be more than 650 technical presentations in twelve interest areas, more than 100 exhibits, plus pre-meeting short courses, hot topic sessions, and tours of local research and processing facilities. More than 1,500 academic, governmental, and industrial colleagues from more than 60 countries are expected to attend the meeting. On the PCP Division level, thanks to the efforts of Mike Dowd, PCP vice chair and PCP technical program chair, and session organizers, we will have seven oral sessions and one poster session. The full program of our division is listed on the AOCS website. So do not hesitate to register now.
The PCP board meeting will be held on Sunday, May 18, from 1:00 to 2:30 p.m., along with other division board meetings, in the same big room. In order to attend this meeting, some board members are advised to start their trip on Saturday. The PCP roundtable discussion is scheduled on Tuesday, May 20, from 12:30 to 1:30 p.m. Open to all meeting participants, its purpose is planning technical programs of future annual meetings. I invite and encourage every one of you to participate in this discussion and provide your ideas and suggestions.
Again, on Tuesday, May 20, in the evening, our division will hold the annual recognition/dinner event. This year 's event will be held at the Washington Athletic Club, just a few blocks from the Washington State Convention & Trade Center. It features a social hour with cash bar, a full-service dinner, recognition of winners of the ADM Best Paper Awards, and a dinner speech by Dr. Ray Hilborn. Dr. Hilborn is a professor of Fisheries Management in the School of Aquatic and Fishery Sciences, University of Washington. His short bio was presented in our February newsletter. He will talk about the current status and challenges of world fishery and the role of plant proteins in sustaining the industry. The full-course dinner menu has been selected, including mixed greens salad, salmon and chicken combination, chocolate marbled cheesecake, freshly baked rolls, sticky buns, coffee, tea, milk, and iced tea. Tickets for the event can be purchased at the time of meeting registration. The ticket prices are set at $55 early/$65 standard. The student price will be $20, the rest is subsidized by the PCP Division.
Also, to keep the tradition for the 2008 Annual Meeting we will run the PCP T-shirt drive. Thanks to the effort of PCP Secretary/Treasurer Phil Kerr, Solae (St. Louis) has agreed to be the sponsor again. Solae was also the sponsor for PCP T-shirt drive during the 2006 Annual Meeting.
A new event this year our members may be interested in is the tour to a nearby research facility—the Northwest Fisheries Science Center, Manchester Research Station. The tour is arranged by AOCS in conjunction with the Agricultural Microscopy Division, the PCP Division, and the Processing Division.
2008 is the PCP Division's election year. Mila Hojilla-Evangelista, PCP immediate past chair, is handling the process. At the time of writing this message, the election has not been completed yet. So, I encourage all our members to vote, and convey my congratulations to all the members of the new PCP board. For candidates who are not selected this year, please do not get discouraged. Continue your involvement and you will be elected next time.
Finally, my term as chair ends this year. It has been my privilege to serve the division board for the past ten years (as member-at-large, book and publication rep., secretary/treasurer, chair elect, and chair). I have encountered challenges and spent many hours of volunteering services. Yet at the same time, I have reaped many rewards of professional service. I am grateful to past and present officers and members of the PCP Division, AOCS staff and colleagues for your encouragement and support.
See you all in Seattle.

Message from the Secretary / Treasurer
Phil KerrThe 2008 Annual Meeting is approaching rapidly and, as Keshun has mentioned in his article, promises to be a great opportunity to foster ongoing education and career development for the PCP Division membership. I encourage you to take every opportunity to attend the technical and poster sessions as well as any tours or short courses that are of professional interest to you.
2008 Annual ADM Award
It is my great pleasure to announce the winners of the PCP Division's awards for outstanding technical contributions to AOCS publications. As a division, we again thank the Archer Daniels Midland Co. for their support of the awards. As in years past, awards are made for outstanding contributions in two technical categories: Chemistry/Nutrition and Engineering/Technology. Before I announce the awards, I wanted to give you a brief reminder of the process that we used to make the selections and final awards. Manuscripts and articles from AOCS journals (e.g., JAOCS) and trade magazines (e.g., inform) are eligible for consideration. Between the two categories, nine nominated contributions from 2007 issues were selected for consideration based on their overall quality, timeliness, significance, and validity of experimental design and methods.
To make the final selection, a jury of AOCS volunteers from the academic, government, and industry sectors of our division was chosen to review all of the nominations and rank them for their technical excellence. As secretary/treasurer, it is my responsibility to tabulate the votes and communicate the results to the PCP Division chair, AOCS, and the editor of JAOCS. The winners are then sent letters of notification and encouraged to attend the PCP Division dinner as it is at this event that the winners will receive formal recognition of their award in front of their colleagues by our division chair.
On behalf of the AOCS Protein & Co-Products Division, it is my pleasure to announce the winners of the 2008 ADM Award:
- Nutrition/Chemistry: Boon-Seang Chu, Sosaku Ichikawa, Sumiyo Kanafusa and Mitsutoshi Nakajima. "Preparation of Protein-Stabilized Nanodispersions by Emulsification-Evaporation Method," November 2007, JAOCS, 84:1053-1062
- Engineering/Technology: Nicolas Deak, Patricia Murphy, and Lawrence Johnson. "Characterization of Fractionated Soy Proteins Produced by a New Simplified Procedure," February 2007, JAOCS, 84:137-149.
The two winning manuscripts will be published in our division newsletter, beginning with the Nutrition / Chemistry winner in this issue (this is available only to division members—you may access the complete paper by following the link from the email newsletter). The Engineering / Technology winner will be published in the next issue.
Please take time to congratulate the winners. On behalf of the PCP Division board, I also want to express my thanks for all the ADM Award jurors for the time they devoted to the award's review process.

I am currently an Associate Professor in the Department of Human Nutritional Sciences, University of Manitoba, Winnipeg. My research interests include food protein-derived bioactive peptides and protein functionality in food systems. Since joining AOCS in 2000 I have participated as an invited speaker in organized symposia during the annual AOCS conferences. I am a regular reviewer of manuscripts submitted to the JAOCS and have published my research work in JAOCS. I was a member of the organizing committee for the 2001 conference of the Canadian Section of AOCS held in Winnipeg. I have also been Chair of the Manitoba Section of CIFST (Canadian Institute of Food Science & Technology) for the past two years and will be completing my term this April. I strongly believe in selfless service to professional organizations such as AOCS because of the great role the organization plays in sustaining scientific excellence and industrial growth.
