Newsletter April 2008
Message from the Secretary/Treasurer
Phil Kerr
The 2008 Annual Meeting is approaching rapidly and, as Keshun has mentioned in his article, promises to be a great opportunity to foster ongoing education and career development for the PCP Division membership. I encourage you to take every opportunity to attend the technical and poster sessions as well as any tours or short courses that are of professional interest to you.
2008 Annual ADM Award
It is my great pleasure to announce the winners of the PCP Division's awards for outstanding technical contributions to AOCS publications. As a division, we again thank the Archer Daniels Midland Co. for their support of the awards. As in years past, awards are made for outstanding contributions in two technical categories: Chemistry/Nutrition and Engineering/Technology. Before I announce the awards, I wanted to give you a brief reminder of the process that we used to make the selections and final awards. Manuscripts and articles from AOCS journals (e.g., JAOCS) and trade magazines (e.g., inform) are eligible for consideration. Between the two categories, nine nominated contributions from 2007 issues were selected for consideration based on their overall quality, timeliness, significance, and validity of experimental design and methods.
To make the final selection, a jury of AOCS volunteers from the academic, government, and industry sectors of our division was chosen to review all of the nominations and rank them for their technical excellence. As secretary/treasurer, it is my responsibility to tabulate the votes and communicate the results to the PCP Division chair, AOCS, and the editor of JAOCS. The winners are then sent letters of notification and encouraged to attend the PCP Division dinner as it is at this event that the winners will receive formal recognition of their award in front of their colleagues by our division chair.
On behalf of the AOCS Protein & Co-Products Division, it is my pleasure to announce the winners of the 2008 ADM Award:
-
Nutrition/Chemistry: Boon-Seang Chu, Sosaku Ichikawa, Sumiyo Kanafusa and Mitsutoshi Nakajima. "Preparation of Protein-Stabilized Nanodispersions by Emulsification-Evaporation Method," November 2007, JAOCS, 84:1053-1062
- Engineering/Technology: Nicolas Deak, Patricia Murphy, and Lawrence Johnson. "Characterization of Fractionated Soy Proteins Produced by a New Simplified Procedure," February 2007, JAOCS, 84:137-149.
The two winning manuscripts will be published in our division newsletter, beginning with the Nutrition / Chemistry winner in this issue (this is available only to division members—you may access the complete paper by following the link from the email newsletter). The Engineering / Technology winner will be published in the next issue.
Please take time to congratulate the winners. On behalf of the PCP Division board, I also want to express my thanks for all the ADM Award jurors for the time they devoted to the award's review process.
