AOCS Lipid Oxidation and Quality Division
Newsletter March 2007

Cliff Hall.

Greetings From the Chair
Cliff Hall

I hope your 2007 has started out productive. It is hard to believe but the 98th AOCS Annual Meeting & Expo in Québec City is just around the corner. I want to thank Karin Schwarz, Afaf Kamal-Eldin and session chairs for their hard work in organizing the LOQ program for 2007. The LOQ technical program has been set and updated since the flier came to you in January. For the current program, click here for poster presentations or click here for oral presentaions. The annual meeting program is a joint AOCS-JOCS meeting. Thus, we will have several joint sessions with the Japanese Oil Chemists' Society. Please see the February newsletter for additional comments regarding the tentative LOQ program. The Lipid Oxidation and Quality Division Roundtable will be held on Tuesday May 15 from 5 to 6 p.m. We will plan the 2008 session so if you would like to be involved in the process please plan to attend.

Since the last meeting, the LOQ division officers have been busy organizing the affairs of the LOQ Division. Jill Winkler served as the chairperson for the Edwin N. Frankel Award for Best Paper in Lipid Oxidation award. A subcommittee evaluated papers and selected the first paper for the Edwin N. Frankel Best Paper Award. Jim Barren, along with the AOCS staff, arranged the LOQ luncheon which will be held on Monday May 14 from 12 to 2 p.m. The division officers have also revisited the division bylaws. The bylaws have not been edited since 1996. The division board has updated the language relevant to the way voting and communications between members can be in electronic form. Copies of the changes are available as a PDF document: click here to download the amended bylaws. A vote on the changes by the entire membership will occur in 2007.

Speaking of voting, it is time again to vote for division officers. The past chairperson Tom Tiffany has created a slate of candidates. If you would like to be considered, please contact Tom or Barb Semeraro. In addition, a great way to learn about the division is to become a Member at Large. We will ask for approval of the officer candidates at the annual meeting.

Another activity that is of interest to the division includes the Lipid Oxidation and Antioxidants Short Course, which will be held on May 12 and 13, 2007. So if you need to touch up on your lipid oxidation and antioxidant chemistry this is a great opportunity. The inaugural International Society for Fat Research (ISF) lectureship series is sponsoring a series of lectures hosted by the Canadian Section of the AOCS. One lecture that may be of interest to all of us includes "Omega-3 Fatty Acids and Statin Drugs: Why We Need to Reevaluate Their Role in the Prevention of Coronary Heart Disease," and will be held on Monday May 14 from 4:30 to 5:30.

The AOCS Foundation continues to move toward their $500,000 goal by 2009. The LOQ Division Board voted to donate $1,000 to the foundation. However, the Foundation is still in need, and, therefore, if you would like to give a donation see http://www.aocs.org/found/Foundation_Newsletter.asp.

To end this letter, I would like to thank Barb Semeraro for all her assistance with division activities and William Gillespie for putting together the newletter. I would like to offer you, as a member of the LOQ Division, a chance to provide comments or recommendations to the board by sending a letter or email to any of the LOQ board members. We welcome constructive criticism but also welcome new ideas that can meet the needs of the members. There has been a discussion about the number of newsletters and the way in which the newsletter is distributed. If you have any opinions about the number of times the newsletter comes out per year, its content, or format, please send me an email at clifford.hall@ndsu.edu.
