AOCS 2008 Annual Meeting in Seattle May 18-21, Discounted Registration Available Through February 29

AOCS is planning an excellent 99th Annual Meeting and Expo, offering participants a full technical program and many networking events. Here are some key division events to take note of:

Check back; the website will be continuously updated as new information becomes available.

Beer Training in Seattle
As mentioned last time, a beer tasting and training session at the AOCS meeting, as an LOQ fundraiser and new member recruitment activity, was proposed at last May's Division Council Meeting.  This event would be held on Monday afternoon, 4-5 p.m..  We would have a master brewer, skilled in art of beer tasting and training to lead the event.

We are planning to do the following:

LOQ Board Meeting
The LOQ Board Meeting will be held on Sunday, May 18 from 1:00 to 2:30 p.m..  All members are welcomed and encouraged to come.

Luncheon and Roundtable
As a reminder, the LOQ luncheon will be on Monday, May 19, so please don’t forget to register for this.  This year’s menu will include herb chicken breast and mocha fudge cake.  The annual Edwin Frankel Award for Best Paper in Lipid Oxidation and Quality will be presented at the luncheon.

The Roundtable for discussing next year’s 100th anniversary program will be in the LOQ presentation room on Tuesday from 5-6 p.m..  This should be shortly after the last LOQ presentation.

13th Annual Student Common Interest Group Silent Auction
This supports student scholarships.  You can get online and provide donations.  Amy Lydic is the contact person for this.  You can contact her by email at Amyl@aocs.org.

LOQ 1/EAT 1: Omega-3 Lipids: Application and Stability (Cliff Hall, Mehmet Tulbek)

LOQ 2: Nutraceutical and Specialty Oils
(Fereidoon Shahidi and Michael Eskin)

This session will cover nutraceutical and specialty lipids, including omega-3 oils, their delivery and food applications as well as health benefits. In addition,other lipids from novel sources with specific properties deemed important to health will be covered. The session will provide both fundamental information and application as functional food ingredients and nutraceuticals for health promotion and disease risk reduction.

LOQ 3: Lipid Oxidation in Emulsions

LOQ 4: Oxidation of Sterols
(Roman Przybylski, Anna Lampi)

This session will introduce mechanism of plant sterols oxidation and products formed during this process. The explanation of analytical procedures required for oxides presence and the amount assessment, followed by health implication of phytosterol oxides, and finally evidence of the occurrence of phytosterol oxidation products in foods and feeds. Also emphasis will be placed on the formation of plant sterol oxides duringoil, oilseeds and food processing.

History of AOCS
The 2009 Meeting will be the 100th anniversary of AOCS.  Divisional is trying to put together a timeline of events over the last 100 years.  Do you have photos or stories of important events for LOQ or AOCS from the last 100 years that you can share?  If so, please contact Jim Barren (JBarren@Kalsec.com), Charlotte Jacobsen (cja@dfu.min.dk), John Weaver (JWeaver@Kalsec.com) or Cliff Hall (Clifford.Hall@ndsu.edu) and we will get those items to those in charge of the timeline.

Eskin.Member Highlight: Michael Eskin, Ph.D.

Dr. Eskin is a Food Scientist in the Department of Human Nutritional Sciences Faculty of Human Ecology at the University of Manitoba, Winnipeg, Canada. He received his Ph.D. under Dr. Sybill James at the University of Birmingham, UK. Dr. Eskin is a past chair of the LOQ Division and was the first chair of the Division Council. He currently serves as Associate Editor for the Journal of the American Oil Chemists' Society and is on the Advisory Board of inform. At the University of Manitoba, Dr. Eskin is both Acting Head and Associate Dean. He still teaches graduate and undergraduate level courses and advises both M.Sc. and Ph.D. students. He also serves on a number of graduate committees and has faculty of graduate status at the University of Guelph.

The primary focus of his research is on the properties and performance of canola oil with particular interest on minor components. He also studies the functional and health properties of yellow mustard mucilage. At the upcoming annual meeting he will be presenting a paper on "Policosanols as Nutraceuticals" in the LOQ session as well as another paper with Dr. Usha Thiyam on "Minor Components in Canola Oil." Dr. Eskin is a Fellow of the AOCS and was awarded the Timothy Mounts Award at the 2007 Annual AOCS Conference held in Québec City.

In addition to over 100 peer-reviewed papers, Dr. Eskin is the author and co-author of 9 books including the recent bestseller in the CRC Food Science Series, Dictionary of Nutraceuticals and Functional Foods co-authored with Dr. Snait Tamir.
