| Greetings from the Chair |
I hope all is going well for you at home and work. The
weather in Fargo went from winter to spring in one
night. The Red River of the North has again spilled its
banks. Fortunately we have not had any major
problems compared to other parts of the country.
Getting back to the task at hand, the AOCS meeting
will soon be upon us. I hope that all of you have
made your hotel reservations and appropriate travel
arrangements.
I would like to thank all of the staff at AOCS for
helping the LOQ division prepare for the annual
meeting. The staff was great and kept the LOQ
division officers on task. Preparation for the meeting
this year takes on a special significance. Without the
extra help from staff, planning the division activity
would not have been completed in such an efficient
manner.
As mentioned in the last newsletter, this year we
have an exciting program that will kick-off on Monday
with the Ed Frankel symposium. On this day we will
celebrate Ed’s 50 years of lipid chemistry
experiences. Fifty years of service to the discipline
should be recognized and at the annual meeting we
planned to do just that for Dr. Frankel. Even if you do
not know Dr. Frankel personally you have to admire
and respect that level of dedication. I hope that all
of you have marked you calendar to attend this
event. The LOQ program entitled “Fifty Years of
Lipid Oxidation Research: A Symposium in Honor of Dr.
Edwin Frankel” will present various aspects of
lipid and antioxidant chemistry. This is a must-attend
event for anyone interested in the history and
science of lipids and antioxidants. Join LOQ in
congratulating Dr. Frankel on his accomplishments by
attending the LOQ luncheon on Monday. We have a
wonderful program that will be centered on Dr.
Frankel and his career. I promise not to bore you to
death with a long business meeting.
I want to thank Kathleen Warner for her
recommendation to have the Ed Frankel symposium.
Along with Kathy, I would like to thank Jim Barren
(vice chair) and the LOQ staff for putting together
the luncheon. They have put much time and effort
into making this a successful event. I am sure you
will enjoy the luncheon program.
I also thank Karin Schwarz and Afaf Kamal-Eldin for
their hard work in organizing the LOQ program for
2006. The “Multiphase Systems: Oxidation and
Stability” will be presented on Tuesday afternoon
followed by “Omega-3 and Specialty Lipids:
Chemistry, Product Formulation and Stability”
and “General Lipid Oxidation and Antioxidants” on
Wednesday morning and afternoon, respectively. For
more details please see the later sections of the
newsletter.
Volunteer Opportunity
In the last newsletter I mentioned that we are
in
need of a new Member at Large. If you are interested
in this position please inform one of the division
officers. Also, we are in need of a chairperson for the
best paper award. My term as the chair of the LOQ
best paper award has officially expired based on the
guidelines for the award. If you would like to take this
role please inform Barb Semeraro or a
division officer.
I can continue in that role if no one wants to take it
on. The requirement is that the chair has a love
of reading many good papers and having an excellent
group of judges. I would be happy to talk with
anyone interested in this role.
To repeat some important information from the
December LOQ letter, I and the LOQ board members
would like you to consider a donation to the AOCS
foundation. The foundation has a $500,000 goal by
2009 and has currently raised $106,000 since the
campaign kicked off at last year’s annual meeting. For
further details about the campaign see
www.aocs.org/found/. Also, if your company
would like to be a
sponsor for the Ed Frankel symposium or any other
session please contact Barb Semeraro. Any
contribution is greatly appreciated.
To end this letter, I would like to offer you as a
member of the LOQ Division a chance to provide
comments or recommendations to the board by
sending a letter or email to any of the LOQ board
members. We welcome constructive criticisms but
also welcome new ideas that can meet the needs of
the members. Hope to see you at the AOCS annual
meeting.
