| Greetings from the Chair |
Preparations are being finalized for the 97th
AOCS Annual Meeting in Saint Louis, MO. Please
make
note of the many planned IOP Division symposia and
activities. I encourage everyone to attend the joint
IOP-EAT Division dinner on Monday, May 1, at the
Missouri Athletic Club, with guest speaker Mark
Matlock. Mark is senior vice president for the ADM
Research Division and was elected president of the
American Oil Chemists’ Society for 2003-2004. Mark
has an M.S. degree in Polymer Science from the
University of Akron and is author or co-author of 7
U.S. patents. The title of his presentation
is “Chemurgy--Back to the Future” [Chemurgy:
branch of applied chemistry concerned with preparing
industrial products from agricultural raw
materials].
Our IOP membership is now 205.
The Executive Board meeting will be Sunday, April 30,
from 2-3:00 p.m. in room 222 of the St. Louis
Convention Center. The IOP Roundtable this year will
be on Monday, May 1, from 1:00-2:00 p.m. in Room
127. If you have questions, comments, or
suggestions about IOP you would like the Board to
hear, please join us. A fine technical program has
been organized by the program chair Jim Kenar with
the help of the many session chairs and speakers.
We would like to invite all members of the National
Biodiesel Board to join IOP. Our program includes two
sessions on Alternative Fuels and a session
on New Uses of Glycerin, plus sessions on
Chemistry of Oils and Fats, Biobased Products, and
Polymeric Materials. I also wanted bring to your
attention the Practical Short Course on Biodiesel:
Market Trends, Chemistry and Production that
will take place before the meeting. I will be giving a
paper on a novel highly efficient non-dispersive
biodiesel reactor on Monday at the Alternative Fuels
I
Session that will be of interest to biodiesel
manufacturers and vegetable oil processors.
Congratulations to Dr. Gerhard Knothe of NCAUR,
USDA, Peoria, who is the winner of the 2006 United
Soybean Board Industrial Uses of Soybean Oil Award
for his work on biodiesel. He will give an award
address titled "Research on Biodiesel and Vegetable
Oil Fuels--Then and Now." The award includes a
$3000 honorarium and a plaque commemorating the
award.
Congratulations also to Dr. Galen Suppes,
Mr. Chuang-Wei Chiu, Dr. Mohanprasad Dasari, and
Dr. William R. Sutterlin who are the recipients of the
2006 SDA/NBB Glycerine Award for their work on
conversion of glycerol to propylene glycol. Dr.
Suppes
will give an award paper titled “Improved Process for
Converting Glycerine to Propylene Glycol.” Each
recipient will receive a certificate and a share of the
$5000 honorarium.
Our Division Web page can be found at
http://www.aocs.org/member/division/indust/.
The Web page
is used in tandem with the newsletters to keep
members up-to-date on Division news. The Web page
will be updated regularly so make a routine of
checking it for late-breaking news.
I look forward to attending the meeting in St. Louis
and I would like to thank all of the IOP Division
Officers and the session chairpersons for their
dedication. I’ll see you in Missouri!
