Mission

The Health and Nutrition Division promotes and facilitates communication and cooperation among industry, academia, and government professionals whose interests in lipid biochemistry and physiology relate to all aspects of dietary fats and health.

The Division encompasses the technical areas of dietary fats and general health. Areas include: the relationship of dietary fats to promotion of wellness and prevention of disease; omega-3 and omega-6 essential fatty acids and eicosanoids, fat-soluble vitamins, and other fat-soluble constituents; fat substitutes; and advancement of nutrition policy. The Division advances the field by organizing symposia and technical sessions at the AOCS Annual Meeting & Expo, by the development of international conferences, and by contributing articles and books to AOCS publications.

The 10th Asian Congress of Nutrition. September 9-13, 2007 in Taipei, Taiwan

The conference was sponsored by the Nutrition Society of Taiwan and the Federation of Asian Nutrition Societies. The meeting covered such topics as general nutrition, applied nutrition, glycemic index, metabolic syndrome, vitamin supplementation, the actions of PUFA and the current status of GMO development and detection. An impressive array of plenary presentations covered perspectives in Human Nutrition (Walter Willet, Harvard University, USA), Nutritional Science in Practice (Mark Wahlqvist, Monash University, Australia), Tackling Disease Burden (Ricado Uauy, Chile), Nutrigenomics (Hisanori Kato, Japan), and the New Growth Standard for the 21st Century (Nita Bhandari, Society for Applied Studies, India). Full proceedings of the 10th Congress of Nutrition were published in the January 2008 issue of the Asia Pacific Journal of Clinical Nutrition and are now available for viewing here.

Awards

Mark Bieber Memorial Symposium

  • "Dietary Fat, Obesity, and Health--from Theory to Practice"
The Health & Nutrition Division of the AOCS planned a symposium in memory of Dr. Mark Bieber during the 93rd AOCS Annual Meeting & Expo. This symposium was conducted in collaboration with the International Food Information Council (IFIC) and the International Life Sciences Institute of North America (ILSI-NA). This symposium was also designed to co-ordinate with ISSFAL (International Society for the Study of Fatty Acids and Lipids) 5th Congress which also took place in Montréal, May 7-11, 2002. The symposium was designed to reflect Mark's commitment to the importance of science as the basis of nutrition education, policy, and practice, and his resolution that science be translated into practical applications for the consumer. Recent developments in the understanding of the interaction of nutrition, genetics, and the environment in these disorders makes these topics very timely.
  • Mark Bieber Memorial Symposium Abstracts
  • A Mark Bieber Memorial Session will take place at the 99th AOCS Annual Meeting and Expo.
