Mission
The
Health and Nutrition Division promotes and facilitates communication and
cooperation among industry, academia, and government professionals whose
interests in lipid biochemistry and physiology relate to all aspects of
dietary fats and health.
The Division encompasses the technical areas of
dietary fats and general health. Areas include: the relationship of dietary
fats to promotion of wellness and prevention of disease; omega-3 and omega-6
essential fatty acids and eicosanoids, fat-soluble vitamins, and other
fat-soluble constituents; fat substitutes; and advancement of nutrition
policy. The Division advances the field by organizing symposia and technical
sessions at the AOCS Annual Meeting & Expo, by the development of

Mark Bieber Memorial Symposium
- "Dietary Fat, Obesity, and Health--from Theory
to Practice"
The Health & Nutrition Division of the AOCS planned a
symposium in memory of Dr. Mark Bieber during the 93rd AOCS
Annual Meeting & Expo. This symposium was conducted in
collaboration with the International Food Information Council
(IFIC) and the International Life Sciences Institute of North
America (ILSI-NA). This symposium was also designed to co-ordinate
with ISSFAL (International Society for the Study of Fatty
Acids and Lipids) 5th Congress which also took place in Montréal,
May 7-11, 2002. The symposium was designed to reflect Mark's
commitment to the importance of science as the basis of nutrition
education, policy, and practice, and his resolution that science
be translated into practical applications for the consumer.
Recent developments in the understanding of the interaction
of nutrition, genetics, and the environment in these disorders
makes these topics very timely.
