Recent Advances in Feedstock and Biodiesel Analysis

Hot Topic Symposium

Tuesday, May 5

9:15 am-12:15 pm

Organizers:  T. L. Alleman, National Renewable Energy Laboratory, USA; and S. Cecil, Sigma-Aldrich, USA.

Although the market for biodiesel has experienced triple-digit growth over the last several years, increasing its utilization and market acceptance has been difficult owing to the presence in the fuel of trace components as well as its cold-weather operability. New analytical techniques and novel applications of current methodology to solve these challenges will be discussed in this symposium. Biodiesel is most often used as a blend with conventional diesel fuel. Formerly, analysis of neat biodiesel was required to understand the properties of the blend. Advances in gas chromatography have now decoupled the understanding of blend properties from the parent fuels. In looking to the future, the biodiesel market will stagnate without new feedstocks. Algal oils may be able to compete with conventional fats and oils someday. However, the successful incorporation of algal oils as feedstocks for biodiesel will depend on understanding the properties of the oils and the resulting biodiesel.
