Message from the Chair
We are already in the fourth month of the year and just a week away from the 104th AOCS Annual Meeting & Expo in Montréal, Québec, Canada, April 28th to May 1st, 2013. I extend my warm invitation to you all to participate in our Division’s technical sessions. PCP Division members have worked diligently to prepare a very strong technical program for the meeting.
PCP activities since last newsletter:
Over the past several months, under the leadership of the Vice Chairperson, our technical session organizers and speakers have been busy lining up five terrific technical sessions of topics to be delivered by world leaders in various aspects of Proteins and Co-Products. These topics include: 1) Role of Protein and Co-Products on Food and Feed Supply and Security; 2) Protein and Co-Products of Algae; 3) Hexane-Free Oil Extraction (Green Extraction); 4) Protein and Co-Products of Hexane-Free Oil Extraction; and 5) Nutritional and Safety Aspects of Plant and Animal Proteins and Co-Products; 6) General Protein and Co-Products. I take this opportunity to thank our Vice Chairperson Stephanie Jung and all the session chairs for their effort and time spent to develop an excellent session line up for the PCP Division. Please read the message from Stephanie that follows as well as the review of the technical program.
This year, candidates for the ADM Best Paper Award were selected from AOCS peer reviewed publications. Special appreciation goes to those involved in session/program planning, ADM awards, and other committees, the annual dinner, and this newsletter, to session speakers and authors and to readers like you. My appreciation and thanks to Phil Kerr, our Secretary-Treasurer, for his outstanding performance in keeping our budget straight. The results of our recent election to select members of the Division’s Executive Steering Committee are available on the Division webpage. I extend my congratulations to them; they will assume their new roles at the Annual Meeting.
Highlights of the upcoming meeting:
This year during the meeting we will hold a joint dinner on Tuesday, April 30, with the Biotechnology Division; the guest speaker will be Dr. Ahmed El–Sohemy from the Department of Nutritional Sciences, University of Toronto. His talk, titled, “Should Our Genes Determine What We Eat?” will be inspiring to all of us. I invite all of you to attend this joint dinner and enjoy listening to our guest speaker. This is a ticketed event, be sure to purchase your tickets when you register.
Special thanks go to all the authors who submitted poster presentations. I am glad to see increased interest among students in presenting their excellent work. Remember, we have a student poster competition this year. Jianping Wu is the chair for this year’s poster competition.
Membership drive is continuing:
I thank our dedicated members who are responsible for making PCP one of the most vigorous divisions within AOCS and keeping it financially healthy. Please do not forget to choose the PCP Division when you renew your membership. On behalf of the PCP Division leadership, I invite you all to approach your colleagues and other potential members to let them know about the benefits of being a member of PCP as well as the networking opportunities available within our diverse group of members. As you enjoy the contents of this newsletter, please remember to pass it on to your colleagues with an invitation to join our Division. As always, we encourage all division members to seek out new colleagues who can help the PCP Division grow and in doing so, meet the challenges we face in this decade.
New book ideas:
Also, the AOCS Books and Special Publications Committee continues to solicit ideas for book projects. Our Division has been approached to consider publishing books on any topic relating to Proteins and Co-Products. I hope some of you will answer this call by sending an outline of your book idea to Lori Stewart, Production Editor.
Like to hear from you:
I invite PCP Division members to share with us your own experience or perspective on research related to your PCP research area of interest so that we can include it in our PCP newsletter. If you have any suitable item(s), please forward them to Janitha Wanasundara, the editor of the PCP newsletter. I extend my thanks to Janitha for her outstanding work as the editor.
As usual, we are open to your suggestions and criticisms on matters relating to the affairs of the PCP division. Please feel free to attend the Division Roundtable on Tuesday, April 30, 2013, from 12:30–1:30 p.m. to share your thoughts about the Division and suggest topics for next year’s Annual Meeting Program.
Thank you all:
I have served three years as the Chairperson and as my term ends this year I want to take the opportunity of thanking all the PCP committee members and the AOCS staff for their dedicated contribution during my tenure. I also extend my appreciation and gratitude to Rotimi Aluko, our past Chairperson, who assisted me tremendously in all respects in helping me carry out the responsibilities of Chairperson when I was newly elected. Congratulations to the newly elected ex-committee members (Chairperson: Stephanie Jung, Vice Chair: Janitha Wanasundara and Secretary -Treasurer: Naina Shah), who I believe are an outstanding team. I wish them all the very best.
I look forward to seeing you all in Montréal!

Message from the Vice-Chair
Montréal is just around the corner! A great opportunity to practice your French! But most importantly to attend an outstanding program, including the one offered by the protein and co-products division. Please check it out.
This year the Division offers 5 sessions plus the general topics session on Wednesday afternoon. Tuesday morning the Division is offering a program on Protein and Co-Products of Algae as well as a session in partnership with the Processing Division, which will be focusing on Hexane-Free Oil Extraction. This session will be followed on Tuesday afternoon by a session on Protein and Co-Products of Hexane-Free Oil Extraction.
Monday afternoon and Wednesday morning, experts from all over the world will be presenting their research on Role of Protein and Co-Products on Food and Feed Supply and Security (PCP1) and on Nutritional and Safety Aspects of Plant and Animal Proteins and Co-Products, respectively (PCP4).
Looking forward seeing you all in Montréal,

Message from the Newsletter Editor
It was with great enthusiasm I volunteered to do the newsletter for the PCP Division in 2010. As I expected, this responsibility was light in terms of the work load and also helped to build great relationships with PCP members, technical committee and AOCS. I enjoy doing this, no complaints; we have great individuals and teams to work with. The membership of the PCP Division encompasses a wide range of individuals, industries and expertise; it is growing and expanding. For me, it is time to pass this responsibility to another division volunteer. I continue to provide my efforts to the Division in a different capacity this year. Thank you all for providing me an opportunity to serve as the Division Vice-Chair. Hope to see you all in Montréal.
