Protein and Co-Products Division Newsletter
Message from the Chair
I welcome all our Division members as we look forward to celebrating the PCP Division and AOCS success via meetings, networking, symposia and exposition.
It was delightful to serve as Chairperson of the Executive Steering Committee, and I extend my sincere thanks to the PCP Division members for their support. We have an outstanding team in place to serve on the Committee for the year 2013. Dr. Stephanie Jung will continue to serve as the Vice Chairperson, Dr. Phil Kerr as the Treasurer/Secretary and Dr. Nicholas Deak as a liaison to PCP.
On behalf of the PCP Division, I am thankful for the efforts of members and personnel for making the May 2012 Annual Meeting & Expo a grand success. I take this opportunity to motivate more students, faculty, government, and industry scientists to participate, contribute and get involved in the PCP Division at the 2013 Annual Meeting and Expo.
The 103rd AOCS Annual Meeting & Expo held in May 2012, was a great success. The presentations and posters from the PCP Division covered novel and original research. The technical presentations on: "Biofuel co-products: Recovery, Value addition and sustainability” was chaired by Drs. Liu, Wang and Wanasundara; “Bioactive Food proteins and Peptides 1 –Fundamentals” was chaired by Drs. Ibrahim and Kumagai; “Bioactive Food Proteins and Peptides II-Applications” was chaired by Drs. Hettiarachchy and Kerr; “Protein Structure and Functionality in Food and Non-Food” was chaired by Drs. Wu and Shah; “Practical methods for assessing By-Product Quality” was chaired by Drs. Musselman and Reimann; and “General Proteins and Co-Products” by Drs. Deak and Jung. In all, there were 49 oral and 14 technical poster presentations under the PCP Division. I thank all of you for your dedicated time and efforts.
Our PCP Division dinner had a good turnout and the guest speaker, Dr. Elaine Krul, a Science Fellow and Head of Nutrition Discovery within Global Nutrition at Solae LLC delivered an inspiring talk on “Soy, The other High Quality Protein”.
The PCP congratulates ADM/PCP Division best paper: chemistry/nutrition winners Nana Wu, Xiaoquan Yang, Shouwei Yin, Zi Teng, and Erli Zheng; and ADM/PCP Division best paper: engineering/technology winners Pablo Salgado, Sara Ortiz Molina, Silvana Petruccelli and Adrena Mauri.
The PCP Division expresses its gratitude to Solae for sponsoring and contributing $2,000 toward the PCP technical session. Solae’s contribution to increase to $5,000 for the year 2013 is very much appreciated.
The 104th AOCS Annual Meeting & Expo is scheduled April 28-May 1, 2013 in Montreal, Canada.
Dr. Stephanie Jung will elaborate on the technical presentations and interest areas for the upcoming Annual Meeting in this Newsletter.
I would like to request each member of the PCP division to pass the word around on all the exciting activities that PCP offers and recruit two new members each. Your dedicated efforts are appreciated. I will also appreciate if the members of the PCP division would identify and let me know of potential sponsors for the technical program. With a team effort, I know that we can make this happen. I am looking forward to an enhancement of the division’s activities with your membership efforts. Your dedicated efforts in providing me with potential sponsors for PCP activities and new membership efforts will be recognized at the 2013 annual meeting PCP Division dinner meeting. I look forward to working with you all in making this a successful event.
I also take pleasure in serving you all towards continued growth and development of the PCP Division and AOCS in general.

Message from the Vice-Chairperson
Thanks to all of you who contributed in 2012 to the advancement of the activities of AOCS and the PCP division. We have begun to look forward to another productive year and the planning for the 2013 PCP program is underway. I wanted to thank all the participants of the PCP roundtable for their valuable input. The scientific program of our division is outstanding due to your unlimited commitment to our division!
The following technical sessions have been submitted for our division for the 2013 scientific program:
PCP 1. Role of protein and co-products on food and feed supply and security
PCP 2. Protein and co-products of algae
PCP 2.1/PRO 2. Hexane-free oil extraction (green extraction)
PCP 3. Protein and co-products of solvent-free oil extraction
PCP 4. Nutritional and safety aspects of plant and animal proteins and co-products
PCP 5. General protein and co-products
It is my pleasure to announce that Solae is continuing its financial support to our division by sponsoring our scientific program as well as other activities of the division, and that we have another sponsor this year, BIO-CAT, INC.
Do not hesitate to encourage your colleagues and students to join the PCP division. If you have any suggestions about potential speakers for the proposed sessions, or if you have any questions or concerns, please do not hesitate to contact me.

Message from the Secretary /Treasurer
The Division’s financial status continues to be healthy with a positive balance. As a result of this balance, we have been able to help support the Division’s efforts to expand its reach to scientists that would otherwise have found it difficult to participate in the annual meeting held earlier this year in Long Beach. Through these efforts we were able to partially support presenters at several of the Division’s technical sessions. In addition, we were able to help support career development of PCP Division members by supporting the poster session contest and thereby give the winners an opportunity to enhance their presentation skills and further their career goals and aspirations. Use of PCP Division funds in these areas will help further the mission of the Division, and we welcome other suggestions from the Division members to help advance the Division’s mission in future activities. As always, we will have to balance available funds with the proposed requests, but the Executive Steering Committee welcomes your proposals.
Fortunately we have been successful in securing funding from corporate sponsors to help offset the annual expenses of the Division and this trend will hopefully continue in the coming years. The ability to help expand the membership of the Division and enhance the development of Division members through the use of Division funds will continue as long as we have the healthy balance sheet that we currently enjoy. Division members are also encouraged to identify organizations that are willing to financially contribute to the AOCS and the PCP Division in order to advance the mission of the organization and bring benefit to the global oils industry and the effective utilization of the co-products that are routinely created during its operations. As always, PCP Division members are encouraged to reach out to AOCS colleagues both within the PCP Division and in adjacent AOCS Divisions for solutions to the critical problems that they are trying to solve or for new ideas for protein and co-product utilization to better address the unmet current and future needs of global consumers. While the AOCS annual meetings provide us with these opportunities for productive interaction, the members of the Executive Steering Committee of the PCP Division encourage all of our Division members to seek additional opportunities to serve both the Division and the broader AOCS organization. There are number of AOCS committees that could benefit from our service so reach out to any of us to identify these career growth opportunities.
